CASE STUDY
OTDR: Low noise front end design
UTEL’s flagship product, the U-Test OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), is a world-class piece of optical test equipment which incorporates a level of functionality which is unrivalled. This required a specialised approach to design
HIGH GAIN
In order to achieve the sensitivity required of the OTDR we required a very high gain analogue front end
LOW NOISE
To make use of the high gain front end it was essential that it was designed to also be very low noise
HIGH BANDWIDTH
It was essential to the design that we achieved the holy trinity of analogue design, also implementing a high bandwidth amplifier
FPGA INTERFACE
The high performance gained from the analogue front end is then interfaced to our FPGA processor – HDL programmed in house
